My travels over the years in Africa presented me with landscapes that were dense with people— markets, villages during festivals, cities. The people would make the landscape in the same way that trees or mountains give form to a more traditional landscape. I have painted a number of landscapes based on photographs or drawings from Africa, and I have applied lessons from the African landscape to other “groupscapes,” in which figures create the movement and mystery of the larger scene.
